ArtSpace Silver Spring

Located in the heart of Silver Spring, Maryland, ArtSpace Silver Spring was developed to provide affordable housing for artists and creators.

This former police station, was rezoned and the existing building was converted into 68 live/work spaces and 11 townhomes. In addition to the living spaces, the Artspace campus also features an exquisite outdoor space that acts as a canvas for artists to customize over time, as well as provides an accessible ramp built into amphitheater seating, a public plaza for sculptures, installations, and events; and a complimentary living space designed for dining, relaxation, and play.

VIKA provided sophisticated and elegant grading techniques to integrate the existing building with the new program while still maintaining accessibility and providing cost-saving measures to the client by reducing walls, railings, and more expensive options. Our full-service site design encompassed stormwater management and infrastructure, rezoning, environmental planning and more.

ArtSpace Silver Spring won the 2022 Best Multi-Family Project from NAIOP DC/MD and the 2023 Design Excellence Award for Exceptional Housing from the Montgomery Planning Department.
